Bullpen Can't Hold Lead As Mets Fall To D-Backs 6-4

Mike Pelfrey was hit by a line drive off the bat of Gerardo Parra, leading off the fifth inning and had to leave the game with a bruised right elbow. Pelfrey was diagnosed with a right elbow contusion and x-rays were negative. Mets led 4-2 with Pelfrey's departure but reliever D.J Carrasco came in and served up a 3-run homer to Ryan Roberts.

The Mets have lost four in a row and 10 of their last 13 to fall three games below .500 for the first time since June 22. Mike Baxter had a single and RBI triple, and Pelfrey singled in a run to help his own cause. Pelfrey again continued to struggle at Chase Field as the D-Backs jumped on Pelfrey for two runs in the first. Although the Mets quickly tied it with two unearned runs in the second, took the lead in the 4th and lost the lead on a Roberts 3-run homer in the 5th, the Mets have struggled to score runs after losing leads.

Chris Capuano (9-10, 4.51 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets tomorrow as they look to salvage what has been a horrible start to this road trip. Opposing Capuano is Jason Marquis (8-6, 4.48 ERA), who is 0-2 and has allowed 15 runs in eight innings in his two starts since coming to Arizona from the Nationals.

Dan Uggla Extends Streak to 33 games

BREAKING: He's done it again. Watch Uggla extend his hitting streak to 33 games ... http://t.co/V0rFqqiless than a minute ago via Social Marketing Hub Favorite Retweet Reply

Anthony Di Como made this interesting tweet - "If Uggla somehow keeps this hit streak going, the #Mets would be his opponents for games No. 46-48 later this month"

Would be something if he gets that close and the first game he faces us he goes 0-for-4. I'd like to see that.

Zach Wheeler Pitches tonight, Former Manager Praises Him

"He’s got a big arm. He’s got a tremendous fastball…He’s got just a really easy, easy arm action, fluid, that jumps up on you at 95, 96 mph. It’s the kind of young arm that everyone looks for.” - Dave Machemer

Zack Wheeler starts for Single-A St. Lucie Mets at Digital Domain Park tonight against the Charlotte Stone Crabs. In two starts since joining St. Lucie, Wheeler is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA. He’s 8-6 with a 3.95 ERA overall in 2011.

Matt Harvey Could Be in the Majors in 2012

"Once a guy gets to Double-A, anything can happen…I think 2012 at some point is conceivable. I think definitely 2013 would be an expectation on our part.” - Sandy Alderson

I think its to early to say if Matt Harvey is ready for the Majors. Given how he has blown away hitters in Single-A, then struggled a little after being promoted to Double-A Binghamton, I think Harvey should be giving time to develop. Harvey who was drafted in the 1st round, 7th overall, in the 2010 Amateur Draft, has been nothing but great news for the New York Mets. I truely believe Harvey will be in the starting rotation for the Mets in 2013.

St. Lucie Mets:
  • 14 games started - 8-2 record
  • 76.0 innings pitched
  • 67 hits given up
  • 24 walks, 92 strikeouts
  • Opponents batting average .238
Binghamton Mets:
  • 8 games started - 2-3 record
  • 39.2 innings pitched
  • 44 hits given up
  • 11 walks, 48 strikeouts
  • Oppnents batting average .282
Seeing the splits for Harvey in the different divisions in the minors, I like to see Harvey pitch a full year in the minors either with Binghamton or Buffalo so he can be ready for the Mets in 2013. As you can see Harvey does not walk many batters and is what the Mets envisioned he be, a Power Pitcher. In 22 games between Single-A and Double-A, Harvey is 10-5 with an 3.27 ERA, walking 35 and striking out 140 in 115.2 innings pitched. Opponents have a .254 average in the 22 games he has started. In his last three starts for Binghamton, 2-0, 2.12 ERA, 17.0IP 13H 4ER 3BB 20K.

Mets 58-60 vs D-Backs 66-53 Preview

Mike Pelfrey 6-9, 4.53 ERA
Daniel Hudson 11-8, 3.83 ERA

Mets Saturday lineup at Arizona: Pagan-CF, Harris-2B, Wright-3B, Duda-1B, Bay-LF, Paulino-C, Baxter-RF, Tejada-SS, Pelfrey-RHPless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Mike Pelfrey has pitched well on the road lately, going 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in his last four away from Citi Field after going 1-7 with a 6.75 ERA in his first 10 road outings. Pelfrey hopes to bring that success to Chase Field against the D-Backs because he owns a 9.68 ERA in losing all four starts, his highest ERA at any ballpark. Pelfrey was also solid in his lone start of the season against the Diamondbacks at home on April 22, holding them to a run on five hits in seven innings of a 4-1 victory. In his last start on Monday against San Diego, he gave up four runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 9-8 win. Pelfrey got the no decision in that contest.

Jason Bay's resurgence at the plate hasn’t been enough to prevent the Mets from losing three straight and nine of 12. Seems to me that Bay tends to get hot at the wrong times in which the Mets are already done from the post-season. Makes me feel that Bay can't take the pressure in big games and come through in the clutch. Bay went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Friday, and is batting .415 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his last 14 games, raising his average 31 points to .254. “I feel like I am a hitter in that box and don’t worry about anything else,” Bay said.

For Bay to say he feels like a hitter now in August makes you wonder where was this kind of hitter from April to July? I question the fact that Jason Bay does not want to be that go to guy to help this team win games. After getting a $66M contract from former Mets GM Omar Minaya, Bay hasn't been what the Mets have expected he could be. Granted he has more homeruns this year then the previous year being a Met, shows that Jason Bay cannot shine in the spotlight. Hopefully the Mets can salvage this series and win today and take the series again tomorrow.

In case you missed it:
- Even with Friday's loss to the National League West-leading Diamondbacks, the Mets are above .500 at 13-12 against the teams currently in first place in their divisions this season.

- Jason Bay was 3-for-4 Friday, raising his batting average to .254. It's the highest that it has been since May 7.

- Angel Pagan returned to the Mets lineup after sitting out one game because of back spasms. He went 2-for-5 with two singles.

-  Justin Turner sat out Friday's game, and Mets manager Terry Collins said he will likely sit him Saturday, too, as well as at least one game in San Diego. Collins said he sat Turner to try to heal up some bumps and bruises.

- Dillon Gee served up four runs in the first two innings and lost again. It's his fourth of the season and fourth in his last nine starts."If he doesn't make a good pitch, he gets away from things. He's got to stick with what made him successful. He's a human being. He's going to make a mistake. He's going to leave a fastball in the middle of the plate. He wanted that ball down, he didn't get it down. The greatest in the game do it. But you can't get away from your game plan and that's what he's doing." Terry Collins said on Dillion Gee's troubles.

Blue and Orange Jersey vs Black Alternate Jersey

1st seen - August 5th, 2011
1st seen - 1998 season

On August 5th, the Mets unveiled their new "Los Mets" jerseys in which they got instant media attention. During the game, many people on Twitter were raving about this new color and jersey in hopes it would ultimately replace the black alternate Mets jersey. For the 1998 season black was added as a team color. Black drop-shadows were added to the blue and orange lettering on the white and gray jerseys. A solid black alternate jersey with blue piping and "Mets" written in blue lettering trimmed in orange and white was introduced. So since 98, the black jerseys have been around for 13 years and in my opinion I think the Mets should drop it and add the Blue and Orange jersey as the newest Alternate uniform. A new Era in Mets baseball should start in 2012 and the newest jersey should be Blue and Orange.

"I can't keep giving speeches. I can't keep giving these guys pep talks. This is the big leagues. These are men. They have to realize what they're facing. They have to realize what it takes to play here 162 times. They know exactly what they're looking at." Manager Terry Collins, on his young team, after Thursday's loss, heading out on a six-game trip to Arizona and San Diego.

With the Mets season pretty much over, the only the thing the team can do is play .500 or better baseball. New York is currently 19 games back in the division and 10.5 back in the wild card. For them to make the post-season a mircale would have to happen, but its unlikely going to happen. With that being said, the Mets go on a 6-game road trip against the D-Backs and Padres. The Mets left 35 runners on base in the four-game series against the Padres, including nine Thursday. New York leads the major leagues in runners left on base. Angel Pagan (lower back spasms) left the Aug. 10 game, and he didn't play Aug. 11. He's day-to-day.

Back in April, the Mets swept a three game series against the D-Backs in which Dillon Gee won the middle game of the series. Gee won the middle game in that series en route to a 7-0 start to this season, but he’s 3-3 with a 5.44 ERA over his last eight outings. He gave up five runs over five innings Sunday against the Braves. The Mets rallied to tie the game, keeping Gee at 2-0 in four starts since the All-Star break, but lost 6-5. “I’m just really disappointed. Obviously, I didn’t get the job done,” Gee said. “I hate to see (Bobby) Parnell come in and get a loss for a game that I really lost. I never really gave us a chance today.” Gee allowed four runs, two earned and five hits in six innings during his win over the Diamondbacks. He’ll try to earn another while keeping the Mets, losers in eight of 11, from dropping two games below .500 for the first time since June 24.

"I need to own what's mine. Look no further than this locker. I could have easily left this game winning." R.A. Dickey after a struggling appearance Wednesday dropped him to 1-8 at Citi Field this year. Mets looked like it was going to be a third consecutive come from behind win, but it all fell apart in the 9th inning for Bobby Parnell. Once again Parnell struggled to lock down the 9th, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits as the Mets lost 9-5. With their playoff hopes already done, the Mets look to keep there heads high and finish the season above .500.

“We’re not built right now to overcome those big leads,” said David Wright, hitting .355 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 18 games after missing more than two months with a stress fracture in his lower back. Mets are 3-5 heading into the finale of its homestand, will face San Diego’s rookie Cory Luebke, who tries to build off the best start of his rookie season. He’ll be opposed by New York’s Jon Niese, who would love to duplicate his previous start against San Diego. Niese pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks for his first career complete game in the Mets’ 1-0 home win June 10, 2010. Chris Denorfia was the only baserunner for the Padres in that game. Late-game dramatics against one of the best bullpens in baseball, the New York Mets find themselves back above the .500 mark. The Mets  has shifted its momentum after entering this four-game set losing six of seven. Apparently the Mets are slowly becoming the comeback kids in which they lead early, then trail late, only to mark a comeback. Mets opened this series against the Padre by erasing a four-run, eighth-inning deficit on Lucas Duda's  two-run walkoff single in Monday’s 9-8 win on Monday. For an encore the Mets followed that with another rally Tuesday, using a three-run eighth capped by a bases-loaded walk to Rubin Tejada, in which they won 5-4 and Jason Isringhausen nailed his 299th career save. In 3.2 innings against San Diego’s bullpen, the Mets have scored 8 runs against the best bullpen in baseball. Padres own a 2.95 ERA in there bullpen.

“This team is not going to give up. They’re going to play until the game is over,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Jason Bay has been on a tear of late, coming into today's game, Bay is on an 11-game hitting streak. He’s batting .439 with three homers, nine RBIs and six walks during an 11-game hitting streak after dreadful .223 average with six homers and 32 RBIs prior to that stretch. Bay against Harang is hitting .370 with six doubles, a triple and five homers.

Since taking over the leadoff spot in Jose Reyes' absences, Angel Pagan has hit solo homers in each of the first two games of this series. “We like to fight to the end. That’s the team that we are,” said Pagan, who has six hits in four games.

Santana Says Shoulder Discomfort Has Gone Away

Mets Manager Terry Collins spoke with Johan Santana yesterday, Santana who was dealing with shoulder discomfort which forced him to come to New York for tests, has gone away. “He says he’s feeling a lot better,” Collins said. “He says the discomfort is gone.”

According to Mets officials, the club hasn't ruled Johan out from returning this season after his rehab from September shoulder surgery. His rehab has gone slower than expected but not longer than most pitchers recovering from this similar procedures. “I was relieved it was just fatigue,” Collins said. “He wants to pitch. As soon as he gets back out there, it starts the clock [for him coming back].” Johan last pitched in the majors on September 2nd, 2010 against the Braves.

I personally feel the Mets should just shut Johan Santana down for the season and let him rest. Resting him now would make him 100% healthy and ready for the 2012 season in which he can reclaim his Ace Status again. It makes sense for the simple fact Johan has shoulder fatigue and had the discomfort in the shoulder. I keep my faith in Mets GM Sandy Alderson and the brain trust of this organization in that they know what is the right thing to do with Johan.

Ike Davis Gets Second Opinion

After second opinion in Charlotte, #Mets will stick with plan for Ike Davis -- idle 3-4 weeks, then surgery decision if required.less than a minute ago via Echofon Favorite Retweet Reply

Ike Davis hasn't shown progress, but the Mets remains undecided on surgery, as reported by Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork. On the season Ike was hitting .302/.383/.543/.925 with 7 homeruns and 25 RBIs.

Davis was seen by two doctors Friday and was told to ease back on his activities, which means he's out for the season. The doctors want to try to rest the bone bruise in his left ankle joint and hope to still avoid surgery. Davis has been sidelined since a May 10 collision with David Wright on a popup.

Isringhausen Gets Save #299, Beats Padres 5-4

One day after putting together a four-run comeback against the Padres, the Mets erased a two-run deficit Tuesday in a 5-4 victory at Citi Field. Mets are growing accustom to comebacks as this is the second straight night they have trailed and came back to win. The Mets scored twice in the fourth inning against Padres starter Wade LeBlanc, scoring runs on Scott Hairston's RBI double and Paulino's sacrifice fly. But despite having several hard-hit balls against him, LeBlanc quieted the Mets bats for the rest of his six innings, striking out five, allowing six hits and walking a batter. Capuano went six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, in which he struck out three and walking one.

After Angel Pagan brought the Mets back within one run on his leadoff homer in the eighth, Nick Evans tied the game on a sacrifice fly. Josh Spence struggled in the 8th inning, walking two (Paulino and Tejada) to allow the go-ahead run to score and give the Mets a 5-4 lead. Jason Isringhausen set the Padres down in order to record his 299th career save. R.A Dickey (5-10, 3.72 ERA) takes the hill for the Amazins as they look to extend there winning streak and possible get back into the wild card race.

After a thrilling come from behind win for the Mets last night, trailing 8-6 going into the 9th inning, they look to Chris Capuano to extend their winning streak and move a game over .500. Lucas Duda's walk-off 2-run RBI single sealed the comeback in a 9-8 win. The Mets chances to reach the playoffs may be slim, but Terry Collin's ball club isn't giving up. New York is nine games back of wild card-leading Atlanta and is missing there top two hitters in Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy, both went on the DL on Monday.

“We’re not conceding anything,” said David Wright, who is hitting .368 with 3 HRs and 18 RBIs in 16 games since missing two months with a back problem. “There are a lot of games left. Crazier things have happened.”

Jason Bay has taken to account the message manager Terry Collins has been preaching to the club, He’s hitting .447 with three homers and nine RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak. “It really is going to take everybody,” said Bay, one of three Mets to homer Monday. Justin Turner, David Wright and Lucas Duda were credited with seven hits and five runs for the Mets in which they scored 3-runs off of All-Star closer Heath Bell, giving him his 3rd blow save of the season.
