Update on Johan Santana
Johan Santana will not pitch for the Savannah Sand Gnats this Thursday in the South Atlantic League Championship Series game, in which he had been previously scheduled, and he also will not pitch in the majors this year either. "That pretty much has been out the window for a while," manager Terry Collins said. Santana underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder on September 14th, 2011. Before the surgery he lasted pitched for the Mets was in Atlanta on September 2nd, 2010, in which he pitched five innings and got the win before going under the knife.
Terry Collins said having Johan pitch winter ball has not been fully ruled out, but it's not something they feel is neccessary. They feel his arm still needs time to rest before anymore decisions can be made. Santana would have ecerted himself too much in a major league game said Terry Collins. "I think we were asking a bad experience afterwards," Collins noted. On Sunday, Terry Collins said Johan could instead throw a simulated game in Fort Myers, Florida. Santana then will proceed to the fall instructional league, also at his home in Fort Myers. According to Randy Niemann, the rehab coordinator, told manager Terry Collins that Johan could be ready for Opening Day 2012.
In Johan's career he is 133-69 with an ERA of 3.10 lifetime.
