The Mets are now closing in on their 3rd consecutive losing season. They have lost four in a row and six of seven in which they pulled within a game of .500. Mike Pelfrey is 0-3 with a 5.14 ERA in 6 home starts since beat the Angels on June 18. During that start he went a complete game, giving up 5 hits and 1 earned while striking out five and walking none. He was in line to end that winless streak on Friday, but Manny Acosta blew the save opportunity in the 9th against the Cubs. But Justin Turner walkoff double gave the Mets a 5-4 win over chicago. In that start Pelfrey labored through 6 2/3 innings in which he allowed 3 runs and throwing 111 pitches.
“I want to throw 111 (pitches) and be walking off the field in the ninth inning, instead of the seventh,” he told the Mets’ officials. Pelfrey also have control issues in his previous start against the Nationals on September 4th, he threw 106 pitches through 4 2/3 innings and giving up 5 hits, 3 runs whiling walking five. Although Pelfrey struggled in that game, the Mets went on to win 6-3.
Jose Reyes admitted on Tuesday that his left hamstring, which has been the reason that landed him on the disabled list twice this year, is hampered by tightness. Even with the tightness, Reyes still managed to get three hits yesterday to move back into first place in the NL batting race with a .333 average, four points higher then Milwaukee's Ryan Braun. Nick Evans was hitless in four at-bats and is just 5-for-32 (.156) iver his last 8 games. Dillon Gee allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work yesterday against the Nats. Mets starters are currently 6-5 with a 3.71 ERA in their last 19 games. Bobby Parnell has been groomed as the Mets' closer, but after his recent struggles closing games out, he entered last night's game in the 7th inning. He has been a one inning reliever since moving into the 9th inning role, but he got one out in the 7th, came back out for the 8th to get two more outs and was lifted by Terry Collins.
Quoted By Jose Reyes: "I feel like my leg is not quite there yet, where I need to be. It's good enough to play, to be on the field. I give you everything that I have."
