The Mets, who have lost eight of 12 at Citi Field, will try to avoid getting swept as rookie Dillon Gee looks to take the team lead in wins. Gee won an 8-5 victory over the Nationals on Friday, became the seventh Mets rookie starter with at least 10 wins and first since Dwight Gooden and Ron Darling in 1984. “Obviously it’s an honor to have my name with those guys, but I don’t necessarily think I’m in that category,” Gee told the Mets’ official website. “I’ve been fortunate.”

In 17 starts this season, the Mets have averaged 4.8 runs a game in starts by Dillon Gee, which included a 5-4 loss to the Marlins on July 24 when he allowed three runs in five innings.

The Mets need to get back to there scoring ways and give Gee the run support he needs. All season Gee has been good enough to earn victories but run support is a must now a days. With yesterdays devastating loss in a 4-3 game, in which the Mets were leading 3-2 in the 9th, had a chance to pick up a game on the Braves but failed to do so. Since coming off a red-hot series in Cincinnati, the Mets have gone cold with the bats averaging just about 3 runs a game in the past 4 games. Mets are currently 15.5 games back in the division and are tied for 3rd place with the Florida Marlins, if they want to see the post-season they have to pick up ground quickly. Entering today the Mets are 7.5 games back in the wild card. With a day off tomorrow, the Mets set to open up a crucial 3-game series against the Braves on Friday. If the Mets plan to pick up ground on the Braves they need to win today and sweep Atlanta this weekend.

Game Notes:

  • David Wright is batting .392 (20-for-51) with two homers and 13 RBIs in 12 games since coming off the disabled list. He is 4 for 17 against Hensley
  • Jose Reyes is batting .341 (14-for-41) during an eight-game hitting streak against Florida after hitting a solo homer Tuesday.
  • The Marlins have won 11 of 14 against New York.
