Sandy Alderson, who told ESPNNewYork Adam Rubin, he tried to acquire a reliever before the deadline, but to no avail. The Mets probably could have used help in the bullpen, who are rank 23rd in the majors with a bullpen ERA of 4.06. Mets starters ERA is ranked 17th with a 3.98 ERA. Alderson who also said he wouldn't rule out a trade before the August 31st waiver trade deadline.

Joe Smith (CLE) would have been a nice addition to the Mets bullpen. In 41 innings pitched, Smith has a 1.10 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 14 walks.
  • vs. Lefties - 4-for-41 (.098) 3 RBIs, 11K
  • vs. Righties - 26-for-105 (.248) 10 RBIs, 19K

Casey Janssen (TOR) could also be another addition to the pen. In 31.2 innings pitched, Janssen an earned run average of  2.84 with 28 strikouts and 9 walks.
  • vs. Lefties - 14-for-67 (.209) 6 RBIs, 10K
Jim Johnson (BAL) another reliable arm coming out the pen. Johnson as pitched in 62.0 innings with an ERA of 2.47. He also has 42 strikeouts with 11 walks. With the struggles of the Orioles in the AL East, Johnson could be a possible trade candidate.
  • vs. Lefties - 32-for-126 (.254) 2 HRs 12 RBIs, 29K
  • vs Righties - 28-for-108 (.259) HR, 10 RBIs, 13K
