Collins Says Shake-Up in Pen Won't Happen Until Sept. 1st

“I’m going to let them finish out the year” in the minors, Collins said after the Mets’ 5-3 loss to the Diamondbacks Sunday. “We’ve brought up about everybody there is in Buffalo, I think, at some time this summer. So we know what they’ve got.”

Terry Collins has indicated the organization won’t look for it in the minors before rosters expand Sept. 1. It’s an issue, for sure,” Collins said. “We’ve got to throw strikes, and we’re not doing that.”

That being saying, the recent struggles of Ryota Igarashi's inability to throw strikes puts a huge burden on the rest of the pitchers in the pen. Ryota Igarashi is currently in the second season of his 2-year, $3 million deal, allowed a run in the 8th inning after hitting a batter, walking two and giving up a single. Terry Collins has shown that his is growing tired of Igarashi's inability to throw strikes when he needs to. “Two days ago, he threw the ball good here,” Collins said. “I don’t know what happened today. No command.” In 27 games, Igarashi has struck out 26, while walking 16 in 21.2 innings, with an earn run average of 4.98.  Ryota said he was rushing his pitches and his mechanics were off and have this to say through an interpreter, "I've been working on throwing a better curveball."

D.J Carrasco has been the pitcher the Mets envisioned when the signed him to a two year deal. Carrasco has struggled as well with an ERA of 4.86 to go along with 22 strikouts and 14 walks in 37 innings this season. The Mets rank second to last in the National League in Bullpen ERA with a 4.21. Houston remains last with a 4.46 ERA.
