Cole Hamels showed today why he continues to struggle against the Mets. Hamels lasted 4 1/3 innings giving up eight hits, seven earned in a blow out 11-2 loss to the Mets. Mets scored there first run of the game on a bazaar play where Utley and Howard did not take charge on a Murphy infield pop up. Trouble started again for Hamels in the third inning when he walked the opposing pitch (Niese) on a 3-2 count. Justin Turner then singles to set up a two-RBI double for Scott Hairston who had a career day at the plate. With the score already 8-2 Mets, Hairston comes up to bat with runners at 1st and 2nd and Danny Baez pitching, Greets him with a 3-run bomb of a homerun landing in the 2nd deck of citi field.
With key injuries to Ike Davis, David Wright and Jose Reyes, the Mets showed today why they continue to fight under the coaching of manager Terry Collins. Big win today for the Mets as they continue to make a push in the wild card race. The Mets are currently 8 games back in the wildcard with the Braves still to play the Nationals tonight. Hopefully with a Braves loss, the Mets can pick up ground on them and hopefully make a push. Its not going to be easy but you never know what can happen.
Cole Hamels is now 3-10 in 16 games against the Mets.
Jon Niese is now 2-1 on the season vs the Phillies.
Mets look to Mike Pelfrey for the series win tomorrow at Citi field.
Tomorrows Starters: Mike Pelfrey (5-8, 4.55) vs Kyle Kendrick (4-4, 3.58)
