Chipper Strikes Again, Mets Fall to Braves

Mets vs Braves (Game 1 Recap)

Well what can you say about this start by Oliver Perez. I always find myself on the edge of my seat when Perez pitches. One inning he gets a 1-2-3 inning on five pitches. Then the second inning comes and he gives up back-to-back homeruns to Yunel Escobar and Garret Anderson. Perez pitched six Ollie like innings on 101 picthes, 58 of which were strikes. His final line was:

6.0IP 5H 3R 3ER 4BB 6K 2HRs and lowered his era to 7.99.

Although Perez gave up 2 runs in the second inning, Perez looked like his settled down in the third inning walking one and getting out the inning without giving up a run. Top of the 4th inning Mets came out hitting with back-2-back singles by Castillo and Wright. Sheffield came up and singled to center scoring Castillo from third and advancing Wright to third. Francoeur then came up and groundout to the shortstop but Wright scored on the play. Murphy doubled to center and scored Sheffield, which gave the Mets 3-2 lead. In typically Ollie fashion when given the lead, pitched the bottom of the 4th inning giving up an RBI double to Matt Diaz scoring Brian McCann on a close play at the plate. Bottom 7th Parnell comes in with runners on first and third and gives up an RBI single to Chipper Jones. After another 1-2-3 inning for the Mets in the top 8, the Braves added on another run in the bottom half with a pinch-hit single by Greg Norton scoring Ryan Church from third. Rafael Soriano comes in and get the save for the Braves in a 5-3 victory over the Mets.

So what now for the New York Mets (42-46) who are 4 games under .500 and 7.5 games behind the hot hitting Philadelphia Phillies. This team really needs to get it together because at this point in the season they cannot afford to be losing close games like this. Perez pitched ok to say the least, but there is still no excuse why this team cannot score more runs. We need to get it together and come out strong tomorrow against the Braves. Hopefully tomorrow we can score runs early and often to bounce back after this tough loss.
