Will Reyes stay a Met or leave for the Big Money?

According to Andy Martino of NYDaily News, the Mets intend to make a low offer to Free Agent SS Jose Reyes, and will let him test how much his value is on the market. The Mets have an exclusive 5-day window after the World Series to make an offer to try and retain Reyes, but it is highly unlikely that he will sign back with the Mets without testing the market." Jose Reyes is not going to be a quick deal," one executive source said. The majority of the Mets fan base would love nothing more then for the Mets to re-sign Reyes and be the 2012 starting shortstop. Mets fans made there case during the season with Don't Trade Reyes and Please Stay Jose chants throughout Citi Field.

As stated during the season, the Mets intend to cut there payroll from $140M range to at least $110-$115M mark, and the Mets executives had made it perfectly clear that if Reyes walks, Ruben Tejada will take over as the everyday starting shortstop. The market for Jose Reyes is going to be difficult to predict simply because Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder will be free agents as well. Reyes does have some value simply because he was the 2011 National League batting champion. It has also been said by several Mets executives, they speculate that the Marlins, Angels and Nationals could become heavy bidders for Reyes' services. If any team offers Jose Reyes Crawford money (which is between $130-$145 million over six or seven years), the Mets will not match that kind of offer. Its basically going to come down to two choices for Jose Reyes, either he decides to leave the Mets for the highest bidder or remain a New York Met for the rest of his career with a fan base that adores and loves him. Also he stated his love for playing in New York and how much he would love to play his whole career in Queens. Ultimately will a 4-year $75-80M contract be enough or will Reyes go for the most money or years and leave the Mets, only time will tell what is in the future for the Mets organization and Jose Reyes.
