Mets hire Bob Geren for bench coach

The today the Mets have announced that they have hired former Oakland A's coach Bob Geren to be their new bench coach. “Bob Geren’s experience as a former manager and bench coach will be a great fit for us,” Terry Collins said in a statement. “Adding a former major league catcher like Bob to our staff will be ideal." Bob Geren won the position over former Washington Nationals skipper Jim Riggleman, who has a history with current Mets skipper Terry Collins. The history dates back to when they were together as minor league teammates in the 1970's. Geren had a 334-376 record as Oakland’s manager from 2007 until his canned midway through this past season.

Geren began his coaching career as a Minor League manager in the Boston Red Sox organization in the 1990s, in which he eventually moved to the A's as a Minor League manager. Also became a big league bench coach and in the beginning of 2007 is when he finally became a Major League skipper. His original hiring in Oakland came from the front office staffed by current Mets executives Paul DePodesta and J.P Ricciardi, and he was part of the coaching staff that help bring the A's to the AL West titles in 2003 and 2006.
