Mets and Reds came into today's game with identical records (50-51). Mets' R.A Dickey and Reds' Mike Leake entered into a pitching duel for five innings. Reds took the lead first in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brandon Phillips doubled to deep right center scoring Miguel Cairo. Reds lead 1-0 going into the top of the 7th inning. Mets put up on 4 spot on the Reds in the 7th. With RBIs from Beltran, Murphy and Bay, Mets took a 4-2 lead into the 9th inning. Jason Isringhausen came on to close and this is where it got very interesting. Hanigan made it to first on third baseman David Wright's fielding error. After striking out Stubbs, Cairo followed up with a single to left field. This is where it gets interesting, Isringhausen walks Jay Bruce to load the bases for Brandon Phillips. With a 1-2 count on Phillips, Isringhausen strikes him out with an 88-MPH cutter to end the ball game.
I was on the edge of my seat, as were many Mets fans watching the 9th inning with the Reds having the bases loaded. Many of us fans know what a 9th inning meltdown looks like and this was an inning I personally thought Isringhausen was going to let it slip away. But Isringhausen composed himself to strike out Phillips and give the Mets the opening series victory. Mets move back into the .500 mark at 51-51. Jon Niese (9-8, 3.76 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets tomorrow against Reds Johnny Cueto (6-3, 1.98 ERA)
Terry Collin was asked on how the team would react to after Carlos Beltran gets traded, “I think the first thing I have to do, if there’s a trade, is see how the team reacts to it,” Collins said. “I want to see how they deal with it, what their conversations are about. I have to get a feel for that.”
