According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Marlins are expected to sign SS Jose Reyes to a 5-year deal, between $18-$20 million a year. Buster also stated that the Marlins have never had a payroll of greater then $60M, makes you wonder how they are finding this kind of money to go after players like Reyes and Pujols. Jose Reyes would be the centerpiece of the signing and current SS Hanley Ramirez would move to third base to accommodate Reyes.
According to all these rumors, it seems Reyes will ultimately sign with the Miami Marlins. Still wondering why we have not heard an offer from the Mets side and also will they be willing to match this kind of offer. Mets have stated before they are unwilling to match any offer that would exceed there expectations in re-signing Reyes. Makes you wonder if Jose does sign a contract in the neighborhood of five years and $90-$100 million, why the Mets weren't proactive in doing the same kind of deal to begin with instead of waiting to see what other teams offer him. The strategy the Mets are taking seems smart but in the end will ultimately back fire on them and Jose Reyes will be the 2012 starting shortstop for the Miami Marlins.
