Why the Mets should sign Mark Buehrle

The Mets should consider signing lefty Mark Buehrle this season because of how durable he can be and how well he eats up innings. Since 2001, Buehrle has averaged at least 200+ innings per year over an 11 year span. In his 2011 campaign with the Chicago White Sox, Buehrle went 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 31 starts. He pitched 205 1/3 innings this season, but has a career high of 245 1/3 innings pitched back in 2004. Buehrle is not your typical power pitcher where he can strikeout batters or blow them away, but through the years he has show that he can stay healthy and pitch every 5th day. Buehrle also has a perfect game under his belt (July 23, 2009), something the Mets haven't seen in the 50 years of being a franchise. Buehrle has a career record of 161-119 with 2,476 2/3 innings pitched. At 32 years old, Buehrle still has a lot left in the tank and the Mets can definitely benefit from him in there rotation.

With hopes of Johan Santana coming back healthy and to his previous form, Buehrle's presence in the rotation can certainly help this Mets pitching staff. If Santana can go 200+ innings like his was accustom to, Buehrle would bring a second starter with 200+ innings as well. Both Johan and Buehrle can be the work horses in this rotation as well as young starters such as Jonathon Niese, Dillon Gee and Mike Pelfrey. Mark Buehrle should be a smart signing by GM Sandy Alderson this off-season simply because pitching, mainly the bullpen, is what is needed heavily this off-season. I personally hope the Mets add a least another starter this off-season and then focus on bullpen help as well as hopefully re-signing Jose Reyes. If Reyes can't be signed i still believe this team can move forward in there re-building process.
