The Mets have lost 10 of 12 since they were a game above .500 on Aug. 10, getting outscored 73-42 during a stretch that manager Terry Collins seems to have boiled down to two key weaknesses. “We’re not hitting and not pitching,” he said. “That’s a bad combination.”

Jonathon Niese takes the mound for the Mets tonight, and he’s been a victim of his team’s disappointing offense in his past two starts, both coming against the San Diego Padres. Niese held the Padres to three runs over 7 2/3 innings in a 3-2 loss at Citi Field on Aug. 11, then surrendered three over six innings last Tuesday in a 6-1 loss at Petco Park. Jon pitched good again,” Collins told the Mets’ official website. “A couple runs in the first inning, but you look up and he threw the ball very well. He keeps you in the game.”

In Case You Missed It:
  • Angel Pagan was hitless in three at-bats and had to leave because of a stomach virus.
  • Jose Reyes continued his running on field Monday but will not be activated when he is eligible Tuesday. Reyes is expected to play a few minor league rehab games for Class AA Binghamton later this week.
  • Jon Niese was flip-flopped from his start Monday to Tuesday, allowing him an extra day of rest after suffering what the team was calling a minor tweak of his back.

Quoted By Terry Collins - "Our intensity level should never be less on a nightly basis. We had a tough weekend against a good team, and we've got to play better against these guys. Best record in baseball, against one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, so we've got to pick it up, no doubt."
